Removing the filibuster means removing an important obstacle to the tyranny of the majority. The filibuster rule used to be harder to employ and maybe could use some adjustment, but removing it altogether isn't wise, and it certainly isn't very far-seeing. That rule slows legislation and promotes compromise. It cuts both ways: when Republicans are in the majority in the senate (as they often are) it protects Democratic interests and forces them to compromise.
But these days, the Democrats are eager to attack the foundations of compromise and checks against unfettered majority rule. They want their way so badly that they'll do anything to get it RIGHT NOW even if it hurts them in the future. If you offer a small child a chocolate bar right now or 3 chocolate bars tomorrow, the child always takes the candy now. That's what Democrats are like these days.
Can you not see that Republicans will use this very same rule to their favor when they get in charge?
And can you not see that Republicans will probably win a majority in the senate this November? It is very rare for a political party to hold both chambers of congress and the presidency for more than 2 years. What with the Covid misery, inflation and idiotic games of chicken with the Russians, Democrats are now less popular than Smallpox. That leads to this likely scenario:
1) Democrats finally overcome resistance in the senate and get the filibuster rule removed. There is much rejoicing. At last Democrats will give us everything we've ever asked for! Wheeee!
2) Knowing time is short, Democrats hastily pass spending bills and direct the money to their most revolting interest groups and clients, which turn out to be the large defense contractors, billionaires and mostly just people WHO ARE NOT YOU.
3) Midterm elections finally roll around and when people ask why the Democrats didn't use their majority for a free healthcare system or mass student loan forgiveness, the Dems say they are working hard drafting that legislation and can do it next year if you just re-elect them right now.
4) The Dems lose both chambers of congress in a landslide because Smallpox > Democrat popularity.
5) The Republicans use their newfound majority to ram bill after bill through congress. Elimination of section 230. immigration rules. Low funding for blue states. Anti trust legislation against Big Tech. Their racist, fascist, seditious, climate change denying treasonable imaginations are the only limit!
6) Finally, uninhibited by the filibuster rule, they dream up some b.s. reason to impeach Biden and proceed.
So, by all means fight hard to tear down the only protection you'll have from Republican tyranny this coming November. Just remember: A democracy is the only form of government in which the people truly get what they deserve!
