There's nothing wrong with Twitter banning people who harrass or engage in serious misbehavior. That's not controversial. The problem is with Twitter banning political opposition. This includes opposition to war and people pointing out our mendacious media's lies and propaganda.
They ban or censor all kinds of people, even sitting congressmen and the president himeslf. These people aren't doing anything wrong, they're just expressing political opinions that Twitter and their liberal friends don't like. When conservatives complain, Twitter's defenders turn conservative ideology against them and say, "Twitter is a private company and they are not bound by the first amendment."
True enough, but it doesn't change the fact that a very imortant "town square" of information and debate is getting censored for political reasons. This is DEEPLY satisfying to some people, and the pleasure of seeing political opponents forced to shut up in real time must be immense. But this is no way to run a democracy.
So make a new Twitter? A few attempts have been made and one of them, Parler, was attacked and destroyed through the coordinated efforts of the Tech Lords. The others have not got far. These alternatives will gain traction once Twitter bans enough interesting people so that they all have to set up shop at the alternatives. When a critical mass of people wind up at the alts, everyone who was following them will switch over and we'll get a bifurcated public square and take another large step toward our upcoming civil war. If you can't talk, the only thing left to do is fight.
But now comes Elon Musk. Will he be influential enough to secure the return of the political exiles? Or will his influence get muddled or stifled and Twitter carry on its merry way?
