Well, then go show them your big heart and volunteer. Or maybe send your kids. Just don't send other people's kids.

I have empathy for my countrymen first, and sympathy for other countries. We cannot solve all the world's problems. By making Ukraine false assurances, we made them believe we would come to their aid when the truth was we probably would not.

With America at their back, Ukraine took a stronger stance against Russia than they may otherwise have dared. I don't blame them for wanting to do so, but they have to live in the real world, not in the world as they wish it was.

These miscalculations have led to that large Russian army on their border. Prior to that moment where the West tempted them to give Russia the finger there was no army, no threats and no bad relations with Russia.

It is easy to look at the situation now and say that America should send troops to help them. But this is because the people doing to the sending will be watching the war on TV, not fighting it themselves. There is little personal cost in the decision. They'll just sent back, drink their beer and shake their heads sadly at the TV. Oh, those evil Russians!

But if it were a little more personal, like if your son were in the thick of it or on an American boat taking fire in the Black Sea your empathy may land a bit closer to home.

Talk is cheap.
